Static vs dynamic QR codes: a business decision guide
Choose a dynamic QR to change the destination after printing or record visit events. Choose a static QR for a fixed address or text. Dynamic QR codes depend on the redirect service remaining available.
Create a QR codeFour questions to decide
Ask whether the destination may change during the lifetime of the print. Frequently changing menus and campaigns favor a managed redirect.
Decide whether destination editing and visit measurement are actually required. A static code is simpler when neither is needed.
Review what happens if the redirect service is unavailable or the subscription ends. A dynamic code depends on a continuously operated server.
Choose whether each location or print format needs its own campaign, then test the final choice on real printed material.
How a static QR works
A static QR contains the final URL or text. The payload cannot be edited after printing, but it does not depend on a separate redirect provider. It suits stable instructions, Wi-Fi details and long-lived contact material.
How a dynamic QR works
A dynamic QR contains a managed short address. A server sends visitors to the current destination, allowing edits and event counts without reprinting. The service and network must remain available.
When campaign measurement matters
Separate campaigns by store, poster or table when you plan to compare them. Scan, visit and click counts are not unique people or confirmed revenue. Account for duplicates, previews and bots, then compare the figures with a real conversion event.
Cost, continuity and ownership
Before choosing dynamic QR, review monthly price, destination-change limits, export options and behavior after cancellation. Keep the original destination and artwork version for important long-lived print runs.
The choice in QRhop
You can create free static QR codes without signing in. A signed-in account also gets one free dynamic QR, seven days of basic analytics and a monthly limit of 100 recorded eligible visits. Premium supports up to 20 campaigns, 90 days of analytics, 10,000 recorded visits per month, comparisons and exports. These are eligible visit events, not people or sales. Check the Premium and checkout pages for current limits and billing terms.
Static and dynamic QR questions
Can the website behind a static QR change?
The encoded address cannot change. If you control that web server, you can make the same address redirect somewhere else.
Is dynamic always better?
No. It is useful for editing and measurement but adds cost and service dependency.
Can I switch after printing?
The printed payload cannot change, so switching methods requires a new code and print.
An example of changing a destination after printing
The addresses below are fictional illustrations, not live campaigns or working demo links. The distinction is whether the printed content is a stable intermediary or the final menu URL.
| Type | Printed content | When menu A changes to B |
|---|---|---|
| Static QR | https://example.invalid/menu-a | The QR still contains A. To change a directly encoded destination, create a new QR. |
| Dynamic QR | https://example.invalid/c/menu→ menu-a → menu-b | The intermediary stays the same. The owner updates its destination to B. |
Choose a static QR with the final URL when the destination will remain stable and you want fewer server dependencies.
For changes after printing, create a free account dynamic QR and keep its original image. Update its destination in the workspace, then read the same file and check the new final destination.
Decoding a campaign address, reaching its redirect, clicking a page button and completing an order or payment are separate checks. A cafe order is not proof of bank receipt or revenue.
Cafe ordering: from table to staff confirmation
Use the public cafe walkthrough to distinguish menu setup, table QR codes and the orderboard. Guests order without installing an app; store settings and staff actions require Google sign-in and permission. Counter payments and Thai PromptPay transfers require staff to confirm actual receipt.
